Abstract

Guft-o-Shaneed", meaning *"Dialogue" or "Conversation", is a reflective and analytical work by Hassan Rizvi. The book explores various aspects of Urdu literature, language, culture, and criticism through a dialogic and thought-provoking style. Rather than presenting ideas in a didactic tone, the author uses conversation as a medium to engage readers intellectually. The book offers insightful reflections on renowned Urdu literary personalities such as Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Altaf Hussain Hali, and Firaq Gorakhpuri. Rizvi evaluates their creative legacy, philosophical depth, and contributions to Urdu literature.

Rizvi examines the intricate relationship between literary creation and critical evaluation. He argues that criticism is not just analysis but a creative act in itself. He emphasizes that constructive criticism is essential for the development of literature.

The reader is not a passive recipient in Rizvi’s view. Instead, the book highlights the active role of readers in interpreting literature. A piece of writing gains meaning when engaged critically by its audience. There is a deep exploration of the evolution of the Urdu language, including its contemporary expressions, regional influences, and the shift in literary tone over time. Rizvi advocates for clarity and precision in literary language.Literature is viewed as a mirror of society. Rizvi discusses how literature both shapes and reflects cultural and societal values. This section connects literary production with social consciousness.

Rizvi provides a concise overview of major critical approaches in Urdu, such as structuralism, psychological criticism, Marxist criticism, and socio-political critique. He evaluates their relevance and application in the Urdu literary context.

The central stylistic approach of the book is dialogue itself. Rizvi sees dialogic thinking as a means to broaden intellectual horizons, challenge assumptions, and deepen our understanding of literary texts.

"Guft-o-Shaneed" is more than a book on literary theory — it is a stimulating intellectual journey. Hassan Rizvi invites readers to think critically about literature, language, and society. His conversational style makes abstract concepts accessible, while his deep literary insight enriches the reader’s understanding of Urdu criticism and esthetics.
