"The Style of Representation of the Noble Traits and Character of the Prophet (PBUH) in Tafsīr Sirāj al-Bayān by Ḥanīf Nadwī"

Abstract

This article explores the unique stylistic approach of Maulana Muhammad Ḥanīf Nadwī in presenting the Shamā'il and moral character of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in his renowned Qur’anic exegesis Tafsīr Sirāj al-Bayān. The term Shamā'il refers to the noble traits, habits, conduct, and outward appearance of the Prophet (PBUH), covering aspects such as his temperament, social dealings, humility, modesty, justice, and compassion. Maulana Nadwī, a 20th-century scholar known for his deep insight into philosophy, logic, Qur'anic sciences, and Urdu literature, portrays the Prophet's character not just as a historical record but as a living model for ethical transformation. The article analyzes how Nadwī's narrative style, rooted in eloquence and intellectual depth, draws from both traditional sources and rational appeal to illuminate the Prophet’s (PBUH) character. By highlighting aspects such as the Prophet’s compassion, fairness, forbearance, modesty, and his physical description—including his radiant face, expressive eyes, and noble chest—the article demonstrates how Sirāj al-Bayān offers a spiritually immersive and emotionally resonant depiction of the Prophet. Nadwī’s aim was not just to inform but to inspire readers towards love and emulation of the Prophet (PBUH). His linguistic brilliance and exegetical precision make Sirāj al-Bayān a unique work in Urdu Tafsīr literature. This paper contributes to contemporary understanding by showing how the beauty of the Prophet’s Shamā'il remains a foundational source of guidance and devotion in Islamic scholarship.
