Abstract

Extensive scholarly work has been devoted to the emergence of Islam in the Indian–Pakistani subcontinent and the formation of various Sufi orders in the region, providing researchers with a rich foundation for further study. Within the broad attention given to the religious elders, sheikhs, and leaders of these Sufi orders, there remain certain eminent figures who, despite their significant status, profound influence, and notable contributions during their lifetime, have received limited scholarly attention. Their names are almost unknown to the general public and even to many specialists. Among such distinguished yet underexplored personalities is Sayyid Adam Banuri, a renowned and influential guide of the Naqshbandi order, who rendered invaluable services and engaged in remarkable spiritual and social efforts as a leader and mentor in his era. Recognizing the importance of his contributions and noting the absence of any dedicated academic study on his life—apart from scattered references in historical sources—this article seeks to highlight his stature among the people of the subcontinent, introduce his multifaceted personality, and examine the lesser-known aspects of his life and legacy. It is hoped that this work will serve as a foundation for more extensive research, thereby doing justice to his role in the history of Sufism in the subcontinent.
