Abstract

The Evolution and Objectives of Feminist Movements: A Comparative Study of Western and Islamic Perspectives. This paper explores the conceptual foundations, historical evolution, and ideological objectives of global feminist movements, with a particular emphasis on their contrast with the Islamic understanding of women’s rights. It begins by tracing the linguistic and terminological roots of the term “Feminism” and its emergence in the West as a response to socio-political inequalities. The study critically evaluates how modern feminist waves—particularly in Europe and America—gradually transformed from the struggle for equality into platforms for secularism, materialism, and moral liberalism. The paper then examines the development of women’s movements in Pakistan, highlighting the roles of organizations such as the All Pakistan Women's Association (APWA) and others advocating for gender reforms. However, the research argues that these movements, influenced by Western ideologies, often ignored the spiritual and moral dimensions of womanhood that Islam upholds. Through Quranic verses, Hadith references, and the writings of prominent Islamic scholars like Syed Abul A‘la Maududi, the study demonstrates that Islam granted women rights to education, inheritance, and dignity fourteen centuries ago—rights that modern feminism is still struggling to define. The conclusion reaffirms that the Western feminist model, while claiming empowerment, has often led to the erosion of family values and moral order, whereas Islam presents a balanced, dignified, and holistic framework for women’s liberation.
