PAIN AS A CAUSE OF DRUG ADDICTION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

The Objective of the study was to review literature on pain as a cause of drug addiction. The systematic review was conducted from 2012 to 2022, and comprised literature search through key words on PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Science Direct, Full Free PDF, and Google Scholar databases of studies about pain, drug addiction, and pseudo addiction published in English language between 2012 and 2022. Of the 63 studies found 17qualified for detailed review. The outcome suggested that physiological and psychological pain is a cause and motivator for substance use. Further research is required to understand the phenomenon of pain and drug addiction in the Pakistani population through validated tools.
