Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of superstition and ill‑omen within the framework of Islamic teachings, linguistic definitions, and psychological analysis. Human history and social behavior reveal that individuals have often been influenced by supernatural assumptions and irrational beliefs. In pre‑Islamic Arabia, for instance, the practice of interpreting the flight of birds as signs of fortune or misfortune known as ṭiyarah was widespread. Islam categorically rejected such practices, emphasizing that prosperity or adversity cannot be attributed to external signs, and declaring superstition a form of shirk (polytheism).

The Qur’an and the Prophetic traditions consistently negate the notion of ill‑omen while affirming fa’l (good augury) as a legitimate source of encouragement, provided it does not compromise reliance upon God. From a psychological perspective, superstition corresponds to delusion or illusion, whereby individuals grant certainty to unfounded perceptions. Such tendencies distort personal cognition and exert harmful effects on collective social life.

Islam redirected faith from blind imitation to critical inquiry, highlighting the role of reason, knowledge, and consciousness, while discouraging ritualistic practices rooted in polytheism. The findings of this study suggest that superstition is fundamentally incompatible with Islamic thought and, in its extreme form, constitutes the unforgivable sin of shirk. Consequently, Islamic guidance seeks to nurture optimism, lawful good augury, and unwavering trust in God as safeguards against irrational fears and destructive beliefs.
