ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN ACADEMIC WRITING AND RESEARCH IN PAKISTAN: A CASE OF CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic writing has transformed research processes, offering both significant advantages and notable challenges. By evaluating current AI applications and their impact on academic writing, this research provides insights into the evolving relationship between AI and researchers, highlighting both its benefits and the ethical considerations that must be addressed for responsible usage. The research explores how AI-assisted tools like Grammarly, ChatGPT, Quilt Bolt etc, contribute to different stages of the research process, including topic selection, identification of research gaps, formulation of research questions and objectives, and the development of literature reviews. The findings indicate that AI tools have become increasingly significant in facilitating six domains in research like idea generation and research design, content development, literature review, data management, editing and reviewing, and communication and ethical compliance of academic writing. These tools support researchers in improving clarity, coherence, and efficiency during the research and writing process. The study does point out the limitations of AI, especially in qualitative data analysis. AI can only help in the initial phases of the research design and documentation. For quantative data analysis programs, some AI tools are good but not perfect and some challenges are there because AI tools like  NVivo, MAXQDA, Leximancer, Quirkos, and ATLAS.ti are functional only for facts and figures analysis, yet we need  to get through the complexities of analysis, systematic coding, and interpretation using more research perfectives. The study recommends that the researcher's AI tools are mandatory for researchers in Pakistan for future development in academic writing and research.
