Abstract

The emergence of the Metaverse—a collective virtual space integrating augmented reality, virtual reality, and blockchain technology—has introduced unprecedented challenges and opportunities for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). This paper explores the evolving legal framework surrounding IPR in the Metaverse, examining the complexities of copyright, trademarks, patents, and digital ownership in an immersive and decentralized digital environment. Traditional legal systems, primarily designed for tangible assets and physical jurisdictions, face significant hurdles in adapting to the borderless and dynamic nature of virtual spaces. The research identifies gaps in existing legislation, highlights case studies on digital assets and virtual property disputes, and analyses how blockchain-based verification and smart contracts may redefine ownership and rights enforcement. Furthermore, the paper evaluates future prospects, emphasizing the need for harmonized international regulations and innovative legal mechanisms to safeguard creators, businesses, and consumers in this emerging ecosystem. The study concludes by proposing a framework for IPR governance in the Metaverse that balances innovation, accessibility, and protection of intellectual creations, ensuring sustainable legal development in the virtual era.
